B12 Injection

Vitamin B12 is a water-soluble vitamin that is required for proper red blood cell formation, neurological function and DNA synthesis.  It is only available from the consumption of animal foods, therefore vegans and vegetarians are more likely to be found to be deficient in this vitamin.  The use of certain prescription medications such as: antacids and drugs for regulating blood sugars, can also cause a depletion of this vitamin.  Vitamin B12 is absorbed in the small intestine and needs stomach acid to be released to aid in its absorption.  Thus, anyone with a malabsorption issue and also the aging population who produces less stomach acid, is more prone to have lower levels of B12.

B12 deficiencies can manifest as: peripheral and diabetic neuropathies, numbness and tingling, fatigue, low mood and affect, vertigo, and anemia.  Correcting levels of B12 can lead to an improvement in many of these areas.  B12 supplementation has also been shown to play a role in the treatment of Multiple Sclerosis and Alzheimer’s Disease.

Dr.Meera uses the preservative free methylcobalamine form of B12 combined with folic acid when injecting her patients versus the synthetic cyanocobalamine form that is commonly used in medical practice.  It has been shown to be superior to both the cyano and hydroxyl forms of B12 in terms of absorption and is the fastest and longest acting form of B12.

The cost of the injection is $20 + HST and the procedure itself is quick and virtually painless.  The effects of the injection are usually noticeable within the first 48 hours of administration.
