This medical treatment is one of the most ancient forms of TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) and most commonly used therapies in the world. According to Eastern philosophy, this modality works on the theory of restoring imbalance. Whether it be an imbalance in energy (Qi) or blood flow, any state of imbalance will eventually lead to the production of a disease state in the body. The intent of the chosen points in therapeutic treatments is to restore the balance of yin and yang and improve both the flow of blood and energy, thus restoring the body to a state of health and decreasing sensations of pain.
Is it painful?
No. We use the finest needles for treatment and thus, there should be no sensation of pain. Certain points are known to be “tender” and it is normal to fee sensations of tingling, heaviness and soreness at, or near, the point of the needle insertion.
What conditions can be treated with acupuncture?
Numerous conditions have been successfully treated with the addition of this modality. We have helped patients with menstrual irregularities, hypertension, stress and anxiety, chronic headaches and migraines, musculoskeletal pain, arthritis, and sports injuries. We also have set programs which can be implemented for weight loss and smoking cessation.
What kind of needles are used?
We use SEIRIN disposable needles sterilized with ethylene oxide gas. All needles are disposed of safely after each treatment to ensure the safety of both the patient and the practitioner.
Vitamin B12 is a water-soluble vitamin that is required for proper red blood cell formation, neurological function and DNA synthesis. It is only available from the consumption of animal foods, therefore vegans and vegetarians are more likely to be found to be deficient in this vitamin. The use of certain prescription medications such as: antacids and drugs for regulating blood sugars, can also cause a depletion of this vitamin. Vitamin B12 is absorbed in the small intestine and needs stomach acid to be released to aid in its absorption. Thus, anyone with a malabsorption issue and also the aging population who produces less stomach acid, is more prone to have lower levels of B12.
B12 deficiencies can manifest as: peripheral and diabetic neuropathies, numbness and tingling, fatigue, low mood and affect, vertigo, and anemia. Correcting levels of B12 can lead to an improvement in many of these areas. B12 supplementation has also been shown to play a role in the treatment of Multiple Sclerosis and Alzheimer’s Disease.
Dr.Meera uses the preservative free methycobalamin form of B12 combined with folic acid when injecting her patients versus the synthetic cyanocobalamin form that is commonly used in medical practice. It has been shown to be superior to both the cyano and hydroxyl forms of B12 in terms of absorption and is the fastest and longest acting form of B12.
The cost of the injection is $20 + HST and the procedure itself is quick and virtually painless. The effects of the injection are usually noticeable within the first 48 hours of administration.
